Plus, I didn't know how good the factory fill was. I have millions of miles on Hondas and I attribute that first and foremost to changing oil - a lot. I'm just a maniac when it comes to changing oil, whether it's engine or tranny.

My theory and the mechanics theory was that the amsoil can not protect as well as Honda MTF.Ĭaveat Emptor, Amsoil may not be your best bet. No other parts (synchros, gears) showed abnormal wear. There was abnormally high amounts of metal "sludge" in the case. Rebuilt at 80k and EVERY bearing in the transmission was toast. Tranmission got progressively louder over time. I ran amsoil exclusively for about 60k miles (honda mtf -> amsoil->amsoil) at about 20k intervals. I've got a good theory that the Amsoil will not protect the bearings in your transmission as well as the Honda MTF. Its not hard to change, and the fluid is about $6/qtĪmsoil may reduce "notchyness" but so does a fresh fill of Honda MTF.

I will do a UOA to see how the AW additives worked, but suspect that AMSOIL MTF (5W-30)will be going in there next.Formula for a happy K series transmission: Fresh Honda MTF at 15k miles, or every other oil change. It just feels like it offers better protection than any other fluid I've tried so far, especially during the hot summer months. You do have to let it warm up a little bit longer before any aggressive shifting though. It is different than any other fluid I've tried, but not unpleasant in any way. After about 4 months, I've been very pleased with the overall performance. Going back to using a 10W-30 engine oil, this is is exactly what I am using now (temporarily of course). If your search fails finding a designated MTF, and you don't like the dealer Mobil fluid, then maybe a multi-vis SAE 80 or 85 GL4 is available that you can try. With your tropical climate, you may not notice though. Many owners report that Redline MTL works well too, but MT-90 seems a little too viscous. If Internet ordering is an option, then AMSOIL MTF would be an excellent choice. I'm not familiar with the Mobil 424 fluid that the Honda dealer uses. The Japanese manufacturers probably offer a re-labeled MTF similar to Honda's.
I have used GM Synchromesh Friction Modified (same as AC Delco) with some success. For instance, synchromesh fluids might be a good place to start. Other manufacturers carry a designated MTF. Hopefully, you can do oil changes yourself in order to save some money while experimenting. I am not familiar with any of its characteristics. I've also seen evidence of a Honda MTF III available in Europe, but have not seen it in the States. It has a lower viscosity, and most likely a different additive package. But Honda MTF II is not like the original.

Honda actually states in the manual that 10W-30 engine oil is good as a temporary replacement. The answer is yes, there are suitable alternatives to Honda MTF. This is a subject that I and many other S2000 owners have considered many times.
